It is in order to actively pursue their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and implement eco-responsible practices that Camping Aventure Mégantic has obtained the GOLD certification in Sustainable Tourism from GreenStep, the largest certification program for the tourism and hospitality industry in North America. "We are extremely proud to have obtained this superior result, being the first in Canada and in our sector of activity to obtain it. We are also the first company in Quebec, all sectors combined, to obtain this distinction. We hope that many other companies will follow suit to demonstrate that we are a tourist destination that takes sustainable tourism to heart with internationally recognized criteria. With this certification, we are recognized for being a truly sustainable and responsible company," said Julie Rouillard, co-owner of Camping Aventure Mégantic. To obtain the GOLD certification, Camping Aventure Mégantic had to meet several specific criteria as part of an individual evaluation, which was conducted by a GreenStep evaluation specialist. During the process, Camping Aventure Mégantic's practices were compared to a set of criteria across 16 different categories, recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Among the sustainable actions undertaken by Camping Aventure Mégantic are the addition of high-efficiency biomass furnaces to its aquatic facilities and main building, as well as the addition of a 4-season family-friendly camp site and a wheelchair-accessible pool chair. To maintain the integrity and credibility of the program, businesses are required to undergo a reassessment every two years. Therefore, Camping Aventure Mégantic will have to demonstrate continuous improvement in its sustainability performance to maintain or upgrade its certification level.
